1、City Overview

Cork is located in the southern part of Ireland and is the second largest city in the country after Dublin, with a population of 400,000. Cork Bay in the city is one of the natural harbors in Europe and Ireland, as well as a shipping center for crossing the Atlantic Ocean. As a transportation hub in southern Ireland, Cork's convenient railway system and airport also make it easier to reach other cities in Ireland and Europe. 

Cork is a city full of historical heritage, with great historical and archaeological value, and its "medieval city" style has been well preserved; Cork is also a modern city and the headquarters of many leading modern enterprises. As a tourist destination, Cork has beautiful scenery and a strong festival culture. It was once selected as the "European Capital of Culture" by the European Union in 2005.

2、Economic and industrial development

Industry: Cork City is the industrial center of the region. Several pharmaceutical companies have invested heavily in Cork, including Pfizer, Johnson&Johnson, and Novartis from Switzerland. Cork is also Apple's European headquarters, with over 3,000 employees engaged in manufacturing, research and development, and customer support work.  

Food industry: Cork is also the location of Heineken Brewery, which brews Murphy's Irish Stout beer, as well as Beamish and Crawford breweries (taken over by Heineken in 2008), which have been operating in Cork for generations. 45% of the world's Tic Tac candies are also produced at the Ferrero factory in Cork.  

Transportation: Cork's deep harbor allows large ships to enter, bringing convenient import and export of trade and products. Cork Airport provides convenient access to the European continent, while Kent Railway Station in the city center offers excellent railway connections for domestic trade.  



3、Highlights of Interactions with Shenzhen

On November 17, 2013, Catherine Clancy, the then Mayor of Cork City, led a delegation to visit Shenzhen and signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Friendly Exchange and Cooperation between Shenzhen and Cork with Xu Qin, the then Mayor of Shenzhen.  

In June 2014, Liu Jun, then Vice Chairman of the Shenzhen Municipal People's Congress, led a delegation to visit Cork and attended the Shenzhen Cork Economic and Trade Investment Fair.  

In December 2015, the then art official of Cork City Hall, Gian Boonnan, led the Cork Modern Dance Company to participate in the 5th Shenzhen International Friendship City Cultural and Art Week series of activities.  

In May 2019, at the request of the International Relations Department of Cork City, the Municipal Foreign Affairs Office provided it with an English version of the epidemic prevention and control guidelines.  

In January 2020, the then Mayor of Cork, Joe Kavanagh, wrote a letter to the leaders of Shenzhen expressing his willingness to strengthen exchanges and cooperation between the two cities. The city leaders replied expressing gratitude and sending New Year greetings.
