Li Weinong, Secretary for Economy and Finance of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government, said that China has always strongly supported Macao's development of scientific and technological innovation and opened up a broader development space for Macao. In recent years, the SAR Government has striven to improve the scientific and technological innovation system, cultivate local scientific and technological talents, promote a development model with universities and enterprises as the main body, market orientation and organic integration of industry, university and research, and promote the transformation of scientific and technological achievements.

He hoped that Macao’s science and technology workers would seize the development opportunities of the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area , jointly promote the development of Macao’s science and technology innovation, and contribute more to the appropriate diversification of Macao's economy.

A total of 9 projects won the second prize of each award, and 13 projects won the third prize.

“The award is a recognition of the team’s work, and it is also the greatest inspiration for the team’s work to translate scientific research into clinical applications for the benefit of mankind.” Zhang Kang, deputy dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Macao University of Science and Technology, said in an interview after the award ceremony. The team he led won the second prize of the Natural Science Award for “key technology research on the mechanism and diagnosis and treatment of novel coronavirus infection based on artificial intelligence and multi-omics”.

Zhang Kang said that the SAR government’s long-term support for medical research workers will greatly promote the development of medical research and encourage medical research workers to forge ahead.

The Macao SAR Government promulgated the Regulations on Science and Technology Awards in 2011, establishing science and technology awards, postgraduate science and technology research and development awards and special awards. Applications are accepted every two years. Among them, the science and technology award includes Prize for Natural Science, Prize for Scientific and Technological Innovation and Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress. The implementation of the science and technology award system has played a significant role in promoting the development of science and technology in Macao.
