Organized by the Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) and co-organized by Soochow University, the "Macau Symposium on Frontier Materials and Innovative Applications (FMIA 2024)" was successfully held at MUST recently. The conference focused on in-depth exchanges on the scientific frontiers and technical challenges in applications in the fields of electronic information materials, low-dimensional functional materials, and optical information materials, aiming to promote academic exchanges and cooperation among Macao ,Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and domestic and foreign countries in the fields of electronic information and optoelectronic technologies.

The opening ceremony of the conference was hosted by Fan Zhongwei, Co-Chair of the conference and Dean of School of Optoelectronics, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS). The main guests attending the opening ceremony site include: Bian Shuguang, Deputy Director of High Technology Research and Development Center of the National Natural Science Foundation of China; Cheng Guanwei, Member of the Administrative Committee of the Science and Technology Development Fund of the Government of the Macao Special Administrative Region; Lee Hun Wei, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Science and Technology of Macau; Jiang Zhihong, Vice-President of the University of Science and Technology of Macau; Li Shuitang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of the Institute of Materials Science and Engineering of the University of Macao; as well as experts and scholars from all over the country, government officials , industry representatives, university teachers and students, and more than 100 people jointly attended the conference.

In his speech, President Lee Hun Wei warmly welcomed all the guests and expressed his heartfelt thanks to all the organizations for their great support to the conference. It is believed that this symposium will build a free and open platform for experts and scholars in the field of frontier materials from all over the country to gain a deeper understanding of the universities' research progress in the field of innovative engineering, to promote exchanges and cooperation, and to jointly contribute to the construction of the Greater Bay Area and the development of national scientific and technological innovation.

Academician Li Shuitang, Chairman of this conference, said in his speech that Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is hub of electronic information and optoelectronic technology industries in China and the world. The development of new-generation information technology, new display, artificial intelligence, energy and environmental protection as well as biomedicine and many other fields benefit from cutting-edge materials research and their innovative applications. We believe that all the experts will bring an academic feast, and we expect that the participating experts will enjoy sharing the latest research achievements, discussing the major scientific issues in this field, looking forward to the future development trend, and jointly promoting the theoretical innovation, key technology research, the expansion of the application field, the development of industrialization, and jointly contributing to the wisdom and strength of the field of electronic information and optoelectronic technology.

Mr. Cheng Guanwei said in his speech that the SAR Government has officially launched the "Plan for Adequate and Diversified Development of the Economy" in 2023, and will continue to deepen the "1+4" strategy for the adequate and diversified development of Macao, and further enhance the influence and competitiveness of Macao in the field of R&D. The development of higher education institutions in Macao in the past five years has been very promising and Macao has grew into the strongest R&D base on the west bank of the Pearl River. It is hoped that through this conference, in-depth academic exchanges between authoritative scholars of our country and researchers of Macao will be promoted to  further enhanced the influence and competitiveness of Macao in the field of scientific research, deepen the research of Macao and our country in the field of optoelectronic functional materials and the electronic information industry, and to realize the in-depth fusion of scientific and technological innovation and industrial development.

Mr. Bian Shuguang, Deputy Director of Macao SARFT, said in his speech that in the recently concluded National People's Congress and National People's Political Consultative Conference, the government's work report particularly emphasized "new quality productivity". Unlike traditional productivity, "new quality productivity" is the productivity with new technology, new economy and new business mode as its main connotation, which involves new materials, new energy, advanced manufacturing and electronic information and other fields. Electronic information materials and optoelectronic functional materials are strategic, basic and pioneering industries for a strong manufacturing country, and have a supporting and leading role in the development of high-tech in other fields. We look forward to this seminar to jointly study the development trend of electronic information and optoelectronic materials, discuss the future development of optoelectronic technology, and realize the transformation of China's optoelectronic materials and information technology industry from the scientific and technological innovation mode of "following research and re-innovation" to the mode of fostering and developing the "new quality of productive forces" to lead the global technological development.

During the conference, experts and scholars delivered a total of 19 presentations and conducted in-depth academic discussions and exchanges about the advances in theoretical research, analytical technology, and industrial applications of electronic information materials, low-dimensional functional materials, and optical information materials.

 

The conference provided a platform for extensive and in-depth understanding of the latest scientific research results, cutting-edge technology development, industrialization process and future planning in the field of cutting-edge materials and applications in China, as well as close cooperation and exchanges, which was highly praised and hotly debated by the participants, who looked forward to closer cooperation with each other in the future, and wished that the University would become an important scientific research and innovation base for the field of cutting-edge materials science in Macao, and continue to train more excellent research talents. We wish that the University will become an important research and innovation base in the field of cutting-edge materials science in Macao and continue to cultivate more excellent scientific research talents to make significant contributions to the cutting-edge materials and photovoltaic industry in Macao, the Greater Bay Area, and the whole country.
