The city of Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital city, is renowned world-wide for its history, architecture, scenery and cultural attractions. The economy is oriented towards services, particularly in the areas of finance, science and technology, tourism and the professions.
Edinburgh is the second largest financial centre in the UK after London and the fourth largest in Europe. It is the location of the world's largest arts festival, held annually since 1947, including a diverse 'festival fringe'. This has given rise to an almost year-round programme of spin-offs; including the Book, Film, Jazz and Science festivals, together with the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and Edinburgh's Hogmanay. The University of Edinburgh will be Edinburghslead innovation collaboration body around key industries of science and technology. Edinburgh City Council will support this with its civic role through the Lord Provost.
