Changchun is the capital city of Jilin Province and one of the key industrial bases and central cities in Northeast China. As of the end of 2021, the city's permanent population was 9.0872 million.

As one of China's highly intellectual cities, Changchun is a national innovation pilot city and a national intellectual property demonstration city. It ranks 37th globally and 13th in China on the "Nature Index - Science Cities 2021". In 2021, Changchun had 21,668 authorized patents, an increase of 22.4%, including 5,051 authorized invention patents, an increase of 45.1%.
